Well Water and Iron Staining: Test Before You Fill, Not After
Iron is invisible in a glass of well water and permanent on a new pool finish. EPA's staining threshold is 0.3 mg/L — well below anything you'd taste.

There is exactly one moment in a pool build you cannot do twice, and it takes about a day and a half.
Filling it.
Everything else in construction has a remedy. Tile can be reset. Deck can be lifted and relaid. Equipment can be swapped. But the first water to touch a brand-new interior finish touches it once, while that surface is fresh, porous and at its most absorbent — and if that water is carrying dissolved iron, the mark it leaves is not a cleaning problem.
On a private well in rural Pasco, this is a real decision and it is usually made by default.
The number that matters is smaller than you think
EPA’s secondary maximum contaminant level for iron is 0.3 mg/L. For manganese it is 0.05 mg/L.
Two things about those numbers are worth sitting with.
First, they are tiny. Three tenths of a milligram per litre is a trace. It is not a quantity you can see, taste reliably, or infer from how your water behaves in a kettle.
Second, they are aesthetic standards, not health standards. EPA is explicit that secondary standards are non-mandatory guidelines covering taste, color and odour, and that these contaminants are not considered to present a risk to human health at those levels.
That combination is the whole trap. Your well water can be entirely fine to drink, entirely fine by every measure your family cares about, and still be several times over the level at which it marks a swimming pool.
EPA’s own description of what iron does is the description of a stained pool: rusty color, sediment, metallic taste, reddish or orange staining. Manganese, which often travels with it, gives black to brown color and black staining.
Why the glass on the counter tells you nothing
Here is the chemistry, briefly, because it explains why people get caught.
Iron in groundwater is generally present in a dissolved form, and dissolved iron is colorless. Pour it into a glass and it looks like water, because it is water with something invisible in it.
It becomes visible when it oxidises — when it meets air, and especially when it meets chlorine. Then it converts to a form that is not soluble, comes out of solution, and settles on the nearest surface.
Now consider what filling a pool actually is. You take groundwater that has spent its life in an oxygen-poor aquifer, spray it through air into a large open basin, and then add an oxidiser to it on purpose.
It is difficult to design a better system for turning invisible iron into visible stains, and the surface it settles on is a fresh, alkaline, porous cementitious finish that is still curing.
The test nobody runs
The Florida Department of Health’s general recommendation for private wells is testing for coliform bacteria, nitrates and lead, with bacteria and nitrates annually. Local county health departments will give you sampling instructions, and the department notes tests typically run in the region of $20–30 per sample through a state-certified lab.
That is sound public health advice and every well owner should follow it.
It will not tell you what you need to know before a pool fill. Iron and manganese are not in that standard panel. They are aesthetic parameters, and the standard panel is about safety. You have to ask for them by name.
So a homeowner can be entirely responsible — testing yearly, results clean, water safe — and still have no idea what their water will do to a new pebble finish, because nobody ever measured the thing that matters here.
What to do, in order
1. Test for iron and manganese specifically, early. Not the week of the fill. Early enough that the result can change the plan. Any state-certified drinking water lab can run it; ask for iron and manganese explicitly rather than ordering “the well test.”
2. Decide the fill strategy from the number. With a real result, the options become concrete instead of theoretical:
- Low iron: fill from the well, normally, with the ordinary startup process.
- Moderate iron: fill through appropriate treatment, and use a sequestering agent so the iron stays in solution rather than depositing while the finish is at its most vulnerable.
- High iron: consider hauled water. It costs money and it is frequently the cheapest line in the job when weighed against resurfacing.
3. Protect the startup window. A new interior finish has a startup regime for good reasons, and the first days matter disproportionately. Every pool we build gets a 28-day startup maintenance period, and on a well-fed pool that period is doing more work than usual — it is the window in which staining either happens or doesn’t.
4. Remember the fill is not the last of it. Every top-up over the pool’s life brings more of the same water. Evaporation removes water and leaves everything dissolved in it behind; that is a slow accumulation over years, not a one-off event. If the number is high, the fill is the acute problem and the top-ups are the chronic one.
The straightforward version
Iron staining on a new pool is one of the most avoidable failures in this business, and it is avoidable for the price of a lab test.
The reason it keeps happening is not negligence. It is that the water looks fine, tastes fine, tests fine on the panel people actually run, and gives no warning at all until the day it meets chlorine in a brand-new pool.
Test for iron before you fill. It is a small, cheap, boring step that protects the single most expensive-to-repair surface in the whole project.
